Dr. GV, the founder-chancellor of VIT University, India, was born on December 8, 1938 in a remote village in the south Indian state of Tamil Nadu. GV’s journey has influenced generations of people who came across him at every stage of his life.
Dr. GV completed the Advanced Management Program at Harvard Business School as late as 2003. This is a pointer to his urge to be an eternal student and learn. He excelled in academics right through childhood and went on to obtain Masters Degree in Economics from the prestigious Loyola College, and completed Law from Madras University. His leadership skills were instantly noticed and his party chose him to contest the elections in 1967. He entered the Indian parliament carrying the hopes and aspirations of around 500,000 people of his constituency.
A student leader in his twenties entering Indian parliament was something unthinkable, especially in 1960s. He championed people’s issues in the parliament and they, in turn, reposed faith in the leader who fulfilled their expectations. They re-elected him by a bigger margin in the next election for another five-year term. He travelled to different parts of the world as a member of parliamentary delegations and appreciated issues in a global perspective. Dr. GV wanted to play a bigger role in the provincial politics so that he can make a direct contribution in bettering the lives of the people in the region. He was elected to Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly for ten years. During this period, he served as a Minister for two years.
He established Vellore Engineering College in 1984 at Vellore. He envisaged that his institution would offer world class education to students who would be influencing the industry in future. The engineering college that started with an intake of 180 students in 1984 has grown as a university of over 18,000 students in 53 undergraduate and graduate programs with nearly 10,000 residing on the campus. It has attracted students from Europe for internships and professors across the continents for delivering lectures. It houses more than 1000 international students on the campus. For the past two years, VIT University was ranked #1 private engineering institution in India. ISO Certification from Holland, accreditation from United Kingdom and the highest accreditation grade from the Government of India reflect the University’s standing as a premier institution on the global front.
Dr. GV helped women and unemployed youth in the region train on vocational aspects and encouraged them to be self-reliant. His initiatives have helped their standard of living. Dr. GV offers scholarships to students from disadvantaged sections of the society to pursue higher studies. He has adopted number of villages in an effort to improve the quality of their lives. He has embarked upon making Vellore - a city of around 500,000 population - greener and cooler by planting one million saplings. His vision reaches beyond the defined horizons.

Sankar Viswanathan, Vice President (Administration) was born on 13th April 1966. He completed his Advanced Diploma in Engineering Technology, at Chisholm Institute, Melbourne, Australia. He has held honoured positions as the Chairman, and Vice-Chairman of Vellore Engineering College, Vellore before taking over charge as the Pro-Chancellor (Academic) at VIT. He has also served as the Secretary of the North Arcot Educational & Charitable Trust of Vellore.
He has always been a very proactive person and has involved himself in all the activities of the University. He has always evinced a keen involvement with the VIT family. He is an active member of the Board of Management, VIT and displays a keen interest in the affairs of the college and being a student friendly person is avidly interested in the academic progress of the students and staff.
He has travelled extensively and gained valuable experience from his tours to USA, Australia, Singapore, Italy, China, Greece, Malaysia, Jordan, Oman, Lebanon, Syria and Rwanda. He is an active member of the Australian engineers Association in Melbourne. His hobbies include playing tennis, cricket, cooking and surfing the net.
It's hard to talk about Sekar without talking about VIT and its beginnings. VIT started as Vellore Engineering College (VEC) which was affiliated to the University of Madras. Sekar started his journey as a student of Electronics and Communication Engineering at VEC in 1986, two years after the college was founded, giving up his admission in College of Engineering, Guindy, Anna University. He helped his father, the Chancellor Mr.G.Viswanathan, in both strategy and execution right from the beginning and was instrumental in building the institution in its founding years and setting it up to become a university and then subsequently the #1 Private Engineering Institution that it is today.
As a student of VEC, he witnessed and helped the growth of the institution from its humble beginnings of classrooms in asbestos roofed sheds. With a keen interest in academics and sports, he was the State Champion in Shot-put Throw for four consecutive years in TIES (Tamil Nadu Inter Engineering College Sports) and he graduated as a rank holder of the University of Madras. Right after his graduation, VEC went through troubled times. Sekar worked hard to help VEC and his father tide over the crisis.
Sekar strongly believed in learning from a broader world and by working hard. This belief and his interest in technology led him to Rochester Institute of Technology where he pursued a Master's degree in Computer Science. He returned home to Vellore and VEC, and served as the Vice-chairman during the 90s. These were the founding years of a self-financed engineering college which would later become an amazing university.
As Vice-Chairman, he followed the lead of his father and he spearheaded many innovative schemes for the welfare of students and staff. Thanks to the amazing talent and team work of the faculty, students and administration, VEC established a strong footing. Sekar introduced various branches including Computer Science, IT, Chemical and EEE. He diversified beyond engineering by starting MBA and MCA programmes. His passion for computer sciences helped him lead the institution in setting up the best computer science disciplines and labs with the help of faculty. He has established the Placement and Training Centre that today places more than 98% of B.Tech registrants. He started the Alumni Association which today has eight chapters within the country and international chapters in USA, Singapore, Australia and Germany. He encouraged the faculty towards Curriculum Augmentation to fill the gaps in the formal curriculum of University of Madras.
He has also taught Database management systems for B.Tech Computer Science & Engineering students with over 90% results in the University of Madras. He has introduced the very first entrance exams that this institution ever conducted - MBA and MCA entrance examinations. Team work of the staff and students made this all possible. The journey was interesting and fulfilling but he nevertheless felt curtailed by the limited freedom as the college was affiliated to Madras University. He craved for autonomy so VEC can excel in curriculum, start new programmes that the students need, set high standards for admission and bring in scholarship programmes. A path was paved to set up the institute to become a University. VEC worked hard to get ISO certification and NBA accreditation, and prepared to become a deemed university under the leadership of G.Viswanathan and Sekar. VEC got the distinction of getting the highest NBA grades for the longest period for all the programmes applied for. Under Sekar's leadership, the faculty, staff and students displayed amazing team effort in reorganizing, making improvements and gearing up towards the deemed university status. Subsequently, VEC became VIT through the outstanding efforts by leadership, faculty, staff and students.
Having achieved a few milestones for the institution, Sekar went back to US to pursue learnings from the industry and larger organizations. He attributes his learnings in technology, strategy and management to the organizations he worked for. He says "I think every organization I worked for and every role I played made me a little bit smarter and wiser". He attributes his leadership skills to his industrial experience. Walmart.com, USA conferred the "Best Engineering Manager" award. Sekar says "I hope to bring the best in the industry - strategy, customer focus, discipline, energy and smart execution - to the education world". While in the US, he continued to help his father in the strategy for VIT.
Sekar returned to VIT in 2007 as Pro-chancellor with an intent to make sweeping changes in the academics of the university, international relations, research, faculty & student welfare and student placement. He says VIT community should be proud of its accomplishments and building a wonderful university which is home to 14000 bright students who come from all over the world. VIT is recognized as the #1 Private engineering institution in the country. Sekar believes that there are yet greater heights to reach. Since its inception, VEC has made commendable progress overcoming hurdles with commitment and passion. It is heartening to record the achievements, VIT has achieved in its short span of 29 years. The vision and dream of our Chancellor is to cater to the needs of the rural communities by providing opportunities to students coming from backward areas, which VIT is doing to a greater extent by giving scholarships, organizing out reach programmes and adopting schools in the near by rural areas.

Prof. Raju, represents VIT faculty's commitment to and dedication for preparing the graduates for challenges in science, engineering, technology, management and the society. He also represents the university's collective commitment to excellence in teaching, learning, research and service. He is a strong proponent of an educational process that nurtures creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship while providing the students with strong fundamentals.
Prof. Raju comes to VIT from the State University of New York, where he has been a Professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering, Dean of the School of Engineering Technologies and the Director of Science and Technology Programs. In the past, he was associated with the Rochester Institute of Technology as a Professor of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering Technologies and the Chair of the Manufacturing Engineering Technology Department; he was a Professor of Manufacturing Technology and the Director of the Center for Advanced Manufacturing Studies at the Purdue School of Engineering, Indiana University - Purdue University; and the Director of the Division of Engineering Sciences and Technology at the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University.
Prof. Raju's teaching and research interests are in manufacturing technologies, electronics manufacturing, engineering education, technology policy and management. As part of his research involvement, he has worked as a Visiting Professor at the Carnegie Mellon University and as a Research Scholar at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He was also a member of the US Team working on the Implementation of Computer Integrated Manufacturing at the International Institute for Applied Systems Analysis, Vienna, Austria. He was a Professor of Electrical and Mechanical Engineering at the University Tenaga Nasional, Malaysia.
Prof. Raju is a senior member of the Society of Manufacturing Engineers (SME) and is the past Chair of its Manufacturing Education and Research Community. He is also a member of the American Society for Engineering Education and the past Chair of its Manufacturing Engineering Division. As a representative of SME, he has been associated with the international accrediting agency ABET Inc., ( used to be known as the Accreditation Board for Engineering and Technology ). In the past, he has served as a Commissioner of the Technology Accreditation Commission and the Applied Science Accreditation Commission of ABET.
Apart from his academic work, Prof. Raju has worked as an engineer, manager or a consultant in industry and government. His association with industry was through the Eastman Kodak Company, General Motors, Voplex Corporation, Raymond Corporation and the Reynolds Aluminum Company. His involvement with the government included engineering projects at the US Defense Logistics Agency and the Indian Railways.

Prof. S. Narayanan received his Bachelors in Mechanical Engineering, Masters and Doctorate in Industrial Engineering and Management from Pondicherry University. With nearly 27 years of teaching experience and 2 years of industrial experience, he has contributed more than 90 research papers in various reputed International, National Journals and conferences. His areas of interest include Industrial Engineering and Management, Manufacturing etc., Six Scholars have been awarded Ph.D under his guidance and he has provided guidance for more than 20 M.Tech student projects. He is currently guiding 6 Ph.D scholars.
He has delivered many Invited Talks and Guest Lectures at National and International level and has authored three books. With the keen interest to promote and develop research, he has organized many International and National Conferences like 22nd CARS & FOF, 21st AIMTDR, GCMM, and ICAMB 2009 and various Workshops, Seminars etc., He has received many awards and honors for his visionary service which include "Cognizant - VIT Best faculty award", "VIT's Best HOD award" etc.,
With his rich academic and industrial experience, he has been instrumental in executing more than 10 Sponsored Research and consultancy projects funded by various funding agencies like DST, DRDL and EU - Asian Link Programme. He is also the Co-ordinator for FIST- DST project and Co - coordinator for TIFAC Core established in VIT University, funded by Department of Science and Technology.
He played a key role in the following accreditation processes: National Board of Accreditation (NBA), Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET), Energy Institute ( EI), UK and ABET, USA. He is a Fellow of Institution of Engineers (India) and member in various professional societies like ASME, ISTE and IIPE.
